Master Control...
This is where all the programs
you see are controlled. It is the final control point before
our transmitter. The operator has control over the many machines
for playing back programs during the day. He or she is also responsible
for recording programs which are transmitted via satellite, and
for properly aiming and tuning the satellite equipment for news
feeds. The operator on duty has a log
(produced by the "traffic" department) which tells
them which commercials to play at what times. WFMZ-TV was one of the
first stations in the country to play back commercial
material from optical
laser disks. This technology has been replaced by
disk-array storage. All of our commercials are stored on a
large computer hard disk array. That means that any
commercial, promo, ID, or other material is instantly available to
the operator. The master control operator
has monitors for the National Weather Service (in case of weather
alerts) and for the Emergency Alert System.
